Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student education records. This act provides for several protections and rights for the students and parents. Keep these in mind when handling student records including individualized training plan agreements (you will learn more about this in Section 7).
Key take away: You will need permission prior to releasing student records to any WBL educational partners or publishing any student directly available to WBL partners.
Take a moment to bookmark the U.S. Department of Education's website for additional guidance on FERPA.
Civil Rights Acts and Amendments
Several federal civil rights laws have passed since the 1960s that have a direct impact on education—specifically on providing broader access for all individuals.
Click each law below to learn more.
As an educator, you must ensure that all partners you work with for any WBL opportunities follow these laws and do not discriminate against any student in your classroom.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
The key concept behind IDEA is that all children are entitled to "free appropriate public education" (FAPE). This means local education agencies must provide educational services to students with disabilities at public expense, under public supervision and direction, and without charge to parents except for fees that are charged for all students. This includes CTE and WBL courses.
Later sections of this course will provide guidance and resources for working with students with disabilities and other special populations in career and technical education courses.
