Types of Educational Programs

There are two different types of educational programs that serve ELLs: Bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL). Bilingual and ESL programs differ in the primary language used for instruction. Several program models fall under each of these educational programs.

Bilingual Program   ESL Program

Uses the native language as the primary language for content area instruction while the child is also learning English. The native language is used to make content comprehensible to the student.

 

Uses ESL methodology and instructional strategies and uses English as the primary language of instruction.

Bilingual and ESL Program Models

Under the ESL program, there are a pull-out program model and a content-based program model.
