Phonics Lessons: Introduction

Phonics is a way of teaching students reading and spelling that stresses symbol-sound relationships. Phonics instruction helps readers understand and use the alphabetic principle. Phonics is the relationship between the letters (graphemes) of written language and the sounds (phonemes) of spoken language.

To teach phonics effectively, teachers should use explicit, systematic instruction. When planning phonics instruction, follow a continuum from more basic skills (e.g., saying letter names and the sounds associated with individual letters) to more complex skills (e.g., using structural analysis to read words).

These phonics activities are designed to enhance the instruction of all teachers of reading and to meet the learning needs of all students, as indicated by data. The activities are sequenced from easier skills to more complex skills.
