Comprehension Lessons: Introduction
The goal of reading is comprehension, which involves constructing meaning by making connections between the text and the reader’s prior knowledge. Comprehension comes from the ability to make inferences, draw conclusions, build associations, and identify important information.

Comprehension should be taught explicitly with supportive scaffolding. To make meaning from reading, students should be exposed to a wide assortment of genres.

These comprehension activities are designed to enhance the instruction of all teachers of reading and to meet the learning needs of all students, as indicated by data.
